Spotlighted Projects

American Red Cross Services to Incarcerated Veterans

Starting in 2016, I conducted resiliency training sessions with soldiers and their families pre/post-deployment through the Services to the Armed Forces program at ARC.

I had the opportunity to spearhead a program with ARC staff and other psychology colleagues to provide mental health and wellness support to justice-involved veterans at Cook County Jail’s Dock 6, a place created for veterans within the Cook County Jail system. In this capacity, I organized elements of the program and analyzed feedback for program content and effectiveness.

This was only the second program of its kind in the US. My colleague Dr. Robert Clark and I presented the program and its results at The American Psychological Association’s National Convention in August of 2019.

Trauma-Informed Policing Training with USG

From 2021 to 2023, I was employed by The United States Institute of Peace to create a curriculum for trauma-informed policing for international peacekeeping allies.

In this capacity, I researched evidence-based methods of trauma-informed police training, created and implemented a 4-week pilot program for an African Border Police Service, hired and supervised training staff for implementation of the program, monitored measurement and evaluation of the project, and collaborated with other USG, NGO and paramilitary services on future trainings.

As 1 of only 2 psychologists on staff with USIP, my insights and contributions to the program, as well as the teamwork and organizational structure needed to implement such a program, were invaluable to both stakeholder groups as well as the USG institution.

Medicare-Based Clinic Design and Implantation at a Major Hospital System

In my first consulting gig, from 2015-2016, I consulted to built an extension of a weightloss/obesity clinic with a major healthcare provider in the Chicago suburbs. Colleagues from nursing, mental health, internal medicine, and obesity specialty clinics collaborated to create a new clinic focused on healthy weight management, loss, and maintenance of health gains.

Integration of Medicare into this new clinic system was crucial to the success of the program, and I helped facilitate credentialing of mental health providers, and provided supervision as the program got off the ground.

Consistent communication with medical staff and hospital administration was critical to the eventual success of the clinic.

What Makes This Approach Different

This isn't a leadership program built around a checklist of competencies or a single model of what a "good leader" looks like.

It recognizes that people arrive at leadership through different pathways, and that some of the qualities historically undervalued in traditional leadership models can be among the most powerful:

listening, connection, empathy, collaboration, relationship-building, reflection, and community.

The work asks not only: "How can I become a better leader?" but also: "What kind of leader do I want to become…and what kind of environment do I want to create for the people I lead?"

That distinction is at the heart of an empowering approach to leadership development.

The program can be developed for individuals or groups of up to 10.

Trauma-Informed Systems & Program Development
from $35,000.00

Building systems that recognize the impact of trauma to respond in ways that promote safety, trust, dignity, and resilience.

Government agencies and organizations increasingly recognize that trauma affects individuals, families, communities, and the professionals who serve them. Yet recognizing trauma is only the first step.

Becoming genuinely trauma-informed requires translating principles into programs, policies, practices, workforce development, leadership, and organizational culture.

This consulting engagement helps government agencies and public-sector organizations assess their current approach, identify opportunities for improvement, build trauma-informed capacity, and develop practical systems that can be sustained beyond the consulting engagement.

The work is grounded in psychological science, trauma-informed practice, organizational systems, cultural responsiveness, and implementation principles.

The 3–6 Month Engagement

The engagement is customized according to the agency's needs, but typically follows four phases.

Phase I — Assess

Understand the current system

We begin with stakeholder conversations, document and policy review, workforce input, and assessment of existing programs and practices.

The result is a clear picture of the organization's current trauma-informed capacity, strengths, gaps, and priorities.

Phase II — Design

Build a trauma-informed framework

Findings are translated into a practical framework for organizational change.

Together, we identify priorities, develop recommendations, establish measurable objectives, and design the training, policy, program, and implementation components needed to move forward.

Phase III — Implement

Put the framework into practice

Implementation may include workforce training, leadership consultation, policy development, pilot programming, facilitated working groups, train-the-trainer activities, and technical assistance. The emphasis is on applying trauma-informed principles to the organization's actual work.

Phase IV — Sustain

Build capacity that lasts beyond the engagement

The final phase focuses on sustainability. We develop tools, internal capacity, evaluation strategies, and recommendations that allow the organization to continue strengthening trauma-informed practice after the consulting engagement concludes.

What Makes This Approach Different

Trauma-informed work is sometimes reduced to a training program: teach people what trauma is, provide a few tools, and move on. This approach recognizes that training alone does not create trauma-informed systems. Sustainable change requires attention to the interaction among:

People + Programs + Policies + Leadership + Culture + Context

The work therefore combines psychological expertise with organizational and systems thinking. The objective is not to create an organization that simply uses the language of trauma-informed care.

It is to help build systems in which people are more likely to experience Safety - Trust - Dignity
- Voice - Choice - Connection - Resilience.

Fees below include consultant professional services, preparation, meetings, virtual consultation, and standard deliverables.
